The residential quarters of Naples, Posillipo is in the Gulf of Naples in southern Italy. The area surrounding the coast has immense natural and historic treasures. An archaeologist’s playground, the concerned authorities declared the region protected in 2002. Called the Gaiola Underwater Park, the protected region is about 42 hectares.
In this protected region lies one of Italy’s best secrets – two stunning and serene islets. Located on the southern border of Posillipo, it is easy to reach the islets as they are near the coastline. While one of the islands has a solitary villa, the other islet is uninhabited. A small bridge connects the two islets, which are separated by just a few meters. The bridge is very narrow and actually looks like a natural formation connecting the two islets.

The islets once housed a temple dedicated to Venus. There are also several other ruins from the time of the Romans. In fact, below the islets in the water are several Roman structures that are now the home of marine creatures. Some believe that the poet Virgil, regarded as a magician, taught here at the ruins. However, the Islands of Gaiola have now developed a reputation of being haunted.
To the uninformed eye, the Islands of Gaiola are undoubtedly a beautiful and tranquil location. It looks like a great place to for retired people to settle in. However, it has an unpleasant history, which the locals are more than happy to reveal. According to legend and the locals around the islets, the islands of Gaiola are jinxed. There is much more in the Gaiola Underwater Park than the two islets. It also includes an archaeological park, an underwater park and several historical remains along the coastline. The Centro Studi Interdisciplinari administers the area and conducts several activities for the pleasure of tourists and the public. These include walking excursions, boating, snorkeling and bird watching.

이탈리아 남부지방, 나폴리만의 주거지역인 포실리아
이 지역은 천혜의 자원과 역사적 유물을 간직한 곳으로 유명하다.
특히 이 지역 42 헥타르에 이르는 가이올라 라는 두 개의 섬은 지난 2002년부터 수많은 고고학자들의 주목을 받기 시작했다.
이탈리아 역대 최고의 비밀을 간직하고 있는 이 두 개의 섬 중 하나는 무인도이고 또 다른 하나에는 외로이 작은 빌라하나가 위치하고 있었다. 이 두 섬은 불과 수십미터 떨어져있어서 이 두 섬을 이어주는 좁은 다리를 통해 연결되어 있다.
이 두 개의 섬은 옛 로마시대의 비너스 신을 모시는 신전과 함께 많은 당시 유적들이 있던 곳으로 , 현재도 섬 주변 수중에는 로마시대 유물유적들이 있어 많은 수중생물들이 보금자리로 사용되고 있다. 당시 베르길리우스라는 시인이자 마술사는 이곳에서 후진을 양성하며 지낸 곳이다.
하지만 현재 이곳은 귀신들린 곳으로 이탈리아사람들 사이에 횡횡한 소문을 일으키고 있다.
천혜의 아름다운 자연경관과 온화한 날씨로 많은 사람들이 이주해 살고자 했던 곳이지만, 1920년 이 빌라의 소유자가 처음 살해된 이래 이 빌라를 소유했던 역대 대다수의 주인들이 생각지도 못했던 끔직한 이유로 돌연사하거나 사업의 실패로 자살을 하는 등의 끔찍한 이유로 생을 마감했다. 현재 이 빌라는 폐허가 된 채로 방치되어있는 상태이다.
현재 이탈리아정부는 천혜의 수중생태환경을 자랑하는 이 섬 주변을 많은 관광객들에게 개방하여 매년 이탈리아를 찾는 수많은 관광객들을 매혹하고 있다.
